We will explore the ethnological and psychological meaning of ritual as exemplified by the women's Dionysian Initiation Chamber of Pompeii. This seminar will examine the plates from the Villa of Mysteries in Pompeii, as illuminated by Linda Fierz-David and Nor Hall. We will apply the archetype of the way (Neumann), rites of passage (van Gennep), and initiation (Eliade).
