Emotional pain signals something is amiss. Our psyche may try to avoid pain with defensive strategies, such as denial, splitting, and shutting down. Suffering that is overwhelming and unacknowledged readily turns into anger and resentment. But cries of pain can also lead to creative expression and healing. We will explore examples of dealing with pain by dissociation, by revenge and retaliation, and by creativity and action evoked by suffering.
